I Stepped on a Poisonous Fish
I’ve been sharing a lot of stories on how the Lord has been working and today I thought it would be fun to share one of the funny stories from my time on the field.
Our first full day in Albania, my team and I went with our ministry hosts’ to Seman Beach to enjoy the beautiful Albanian ocean. It was the perfect day. The weather was warm and sunny, the water was blue and cool, and my team was having such a great time together.
We spent the entire day there and on my way back in from swimming I stepped on something sharp on the ocean floor. I thought it was just a broken sea shell or something of the sort and thought it would be fine. However, 3 minutes later my foot was on fire and I could hardly walk.
My team helped me up to the restaurant near by where our new friend told us her dad knew how to deal with the problem. I made it up there and they placed my foot in hot water and had me sit for a minute. They told me it was probably a “danger” fish or as we know it, a weaver fish. Turns out I stepped on the one little poisonous part of this fish and they only have about 1 case a year.
They proceed to beat my foot with a spoon and squeeze the wound to try and make it bleed followed by more water soaking. This process continued for about 30 minutes with all the customers watching on from their tables.
By the time the pain had receded and the owner felt comfortable that I was safe to leave, I had built quite a crowd around me. Haha there were all the workers of the restaurant, half my team, our ministry hosts’, and the restaurants customers all taking a look. I on the other hand coped by laughing through the whole process.
So that’s my story of how I was the once a year case of weaver fish poisoning and entertainment for all the lucky customers who got to bear witness to an American girl having her foot beat with a wooden spoon while cry laughing.
Love y’all.
As I read, I can hear you telling this story while cry laughing. I love reading all the work God is doing in and through you. I’m so proud of you. I love you! I miss you dearly!
Ashton, what an experience (frightening). Glad you are ok. Be safe.
